Basketball Summer Camp

My EDGE project was done during this year summer 2017. My project was a basketball summer day camp for elementary and middle school boys and girls kids.  I participated in two different summer camps this summer. One at Southern Utah University located in Cedar City, Utah and the other camp was at my old high school Inglewood High located in Inglewood, California. The camp at Southern Utah University was held by head basketball coach Todd Simon while the other camp in Inglewood was ran by head coach Patrick Roy. Both camp had lots of teaching sessions on ball handling, shooting, and passing as well as team concepts. The campers also participated in mini competition against each other such as 1 on 1, 3 on 3, and 5 on 5.

My project benefited me because I had a chance to teach and coach players. This project gave me a chance to learn things about myself as teacher and a coach. This project helped me with my leadership skills and communication skills. Ultimately this gave me a chance to give back to others give them knowledge about the game of basketball. I enjoyed every minute of this project.

The reason I participated in both camps was to give back to the community I lived in and young kids with dreams of playing college basketball one day. This project was big for me because I was never able to participate in camps because I could not afford it growing up. Going back to my old high school was very enjoyable because I had a chance to teach and help kids that do not really have outlets and opportunities some other kids may have. I know tons of kids look up to me to be there role model and look to me for leadership. Having that was so amazing and made my project just that much better.

I encountered a lot of challenges while completing my project but it was nothing I did not except from the kids. Some of the challenges I came across during my project was being able to explain different drills to the campers. Some would not understand. Some of the things I did were use different teaching styles while completing this project. Sometimes I would have to explain and demonstrate to the campers if they did not understand.
